DIY GPS

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

Just sharing this add-on. Some of you may remember of my previous $2 daiso hook solution for my Garmin. So, I finally removed that and replaced with a wider and sleeker DIY screen. Bought form eBay, its a phablet made by Aoson. Been searching around for awhile till i stumbled into this. Not expensive (ard $80 plus SGD). Below some pics to share.

My previous Garmin;

I used tinting film to mask out the metallic hooks and the brand on the back

Just by inserting the hooks into the gaps on dash, this is how it look

I had to remove Garmin cables and re-run new cable for the phablet.

The original cable provided is straight type. I need to get an angled connector (yes, eBay). Note that there's 2 types of angle, left 90 deg or right 90 deg. This is so call left 90 deg

I removed most of its original apps and installed Waze, Google map and Sygic. Sygic is nice but have to pay for premium, after 7 days trial. I put a Jag wallpaper to mimic original  :)

Thanks for the 'likes' Bros. Btw, I missed out some info. Managed to find the pics and links.

The tablet can also play videos. Bought a bluetooth AUX Transmitter/Receiver to pair to tablet. So the sound is played through the car audio system.

This is the 12V charger that I found/bought;

After pairing, plug into Aux in center console (ignore the mess inside, got lots of junk there)

Sample of video (youtube). Once pairing successful, sound will play thru car audio. Tablet audio is muted automatically.

The tablet will stay in place with just the 2 hooks? Wouldn't it fall off during driving especially over humps?

How did you hide the wire? Did you have to plug it into the cigarette charger?

I'm really impressed :)

Hi Yogi,

Yes. It does hold in plc but not solidly sturdy. It doesn't fall off over bumps/humps. However, if u touch the screen with high pressure, it does move bit. Its the only solution i have in mind now that holds it and sleek, and to slot into the dash gap. Previously, i only used one hook on my previous Garmin. Its smaller and not big or heavy like this tablet. Apparently, the two "stem" on each hook has length that sits into the gaps. It can also pulled out easily when ever u need to keep out of sight. (especially when I was in 'neighbor country'. I was told break-ins incident to steal DIY tablets ,etc. I have a pouch (yea, bought from daiso too) to keep it safe. Only thing i can't hide is the wire that dangles.

Well, I had previously run my Garmin wire to the fuse box on driver side, near the accelerator. So, removed that, replaced with this. Apologies, no detailed pics taken on the wiring process as I had to focus on the panels, wirings and routing. Forgotten to re-take again. I bought a fuse jumper from Autobacs. What it does is, it has a wire that soldered to one point of the fuse. That wire has its respective fuse holder too. Its connected to a 12v cig socket unit. I didn't want to cut my previous Garmin original cig plug. So, this was the perfect solution. I unplug a 10 amp fuse that is for "Cig Socket" in the fuse box. This is safest choice bcos if anything goes wrong, or 'fused', its just for the cig socket that's loss 12V. Don't use other important fuse connection, other than this.

I will try search for photos I might have taken previously. Else, I'll try take some and provide more details on the wirings. I will need some time to do this.
